How do I keep my neighbors chickens off my property?

They are driving me and my 2 dogs CRAZY. I am now having to keep both my dogs tied up (I have 18 acres) and this is not fair to them. I cannot run the risk of one of my dogs chasing them near the neighbors property because they will be shot!!! This guy has shot them before and would not hesitate again. PLEASE help.

Update:

Thank you all. Here's my new delemia... if I confront him about keeping the chickens penned and he says no..... and then they mysteriously turn up missing..... it's my fault and he might take it out on my dogs while I'm at work. Get the picture.... he's not a nice guy. Thanks for all the help... keep it comin'!

Update 2:

And I'm trying my hardest to save up enough for a fence.... but they already fly over the parts that are fenced!

I would shoot the chickens because if the neighbor would shoot my own dogs on my property then he has no right to let his chickens run on my property. But first I would tell the guy if he doesn't keep the chickens on his property than I would shoot then.

Since you have such a large property...I would only be concerned about the dogs going off your property to the neighbor...especially since he shot at them before. It should really be your neighbors problem to keep his chickens in a coop and if your dog gets a chicken on your property he will have a nice full stomach. Now to keep your dogs on your property...traditional fencing is not the solution. You may want to try Border Patrol fencing. It will keep your dogs on your property in a contained area yet they will feel as though they are free...and who cares then if the chickens come on your property...less dog food for you to buy then. Good Luck

This is a problem the Land Lord should have addressed. You can't put up a tall enough fence to keep chickens out, unless you cover it also. Chickens can fly over a fence without a screened in cover. When he isn't home, gather the birds and take them for a ride to other parts of the country. They can find a new home across the county when you release them from the cage you have them in. Deny any knowlege of the birds where abouts when asked.

WOW , you got a problem & am not sure if you want to involve the cops (pretty sure it's illegal for your neighbor to shoot other ppls pets & he might be one of them crazy neighbors ) My suggestion is to make a penned / kennel area for the dogs so they can't get to the chickens & they will probably get used to seeing the chickens & not wreak havoc or go crazy wanting to kill them... that's what we did with our Lab & a Jack Russell who thinks chickens & anything else is there for him to chase & kill !! Dogs don't need alot of outside room & not 18 acres even if they like it, otherwise you & your neighbor might end up in a war or even worse you will have an injusred or dead dog :( If you just want to let them run some then I would say be out there & possibly muzzles so they can't kill, they may even get used to the chickens, tho if your dogs are anything like a Jack Russell, don't think there could ever be peace between them !!!

  • Talk to your county animal control officer. If they don't have an county animal control officer, talk to the local law authorities. But that may make the situation worse between you and your neighbor.

The only way to keep the chickens off your property is for your neighbor to pen them up. Since his attitude is that the chickens have more right on your property than your own dogs I doubt he is going to be receptive to that.

A bag of flour, some corn oil and a good frying pan. LOL

Actually it sounds like you have some real jerks for neighbors. To keep peace try a dog run, are try live animal traps to catch the chickens then give them to someone who will take proper care of them.

A fence seems to be in order

i hope it works, you should try it, a wood fence so the dogs won't see through it start barking at the chickens

His chickens his responsibilty to contain them on his property

just like your dogs are your responsiblity

I do know in some areas it is legally for farmers to kill dogs that trespass and disturb their livestock.

Contact your township office see if they can give advice on what can be done maybe they will go out and talk to hime and explain that his loose chickens are causing problems on your property

Put up a fence (enclosed) for your dogs .When the chickens come in the fence it will be Yum Yum for the dogs

Well if shooting your dogs made sure that you do not allow your dogs near his property it would seem to me that will work for him too. Shoot them, I bet when he has lost enough chickens he will make sure they stay on his property.

Have you tried telling him to keep them off your property?
