Have a new burrow, would like advice on keeping him happy and healthy, and quiet?

Today, an subcontractor that works for me from time to time, convinced me to adopt a burrow/donkey he had. He bought 60 acres of pasture land a couple years ago and the donkey was left behind by the previous landowner.

I have miniature horse already, a mare, this donkey is male but neither of us knew if he is intact. How would you be able to tell?

what kinda things make these burrows heehaw? i want to eliminate as much noise as i can.

what makes a donkey happy? this will be first experience around these animals, plenty of time around all kinds of horses but no burrows. I will of course do the normal things, regular brushing, hoof cleaning, mane and tail work, treats, etc.

I will have a vet or farrier swing by this week to give him a once over and he looks like he could use some worm meds.

thanks in advance

Update:

I would've checked the "jewel purse" a little closer, but by the time he arrived at my place he was scared out of his wits from the round-up and trailer ride. so i just let him run off with the pony. he hasnt been handled much since they got the property and i will give him 2 days peace before i start working with him.

a friend of mine had miniature burrows, they were very quiet when out together, they are social animals, if its out with your pony a lot it should be pretty quiet and calm after getting used to its new environment. if he's intact you would be able to see his "jewels" under his tail area. I'm sure you would have noticed already.

  • Cool! Let him stay w/ the horses so as not to get lonely...other than that sounds like everything is all right! Maybe adopt him a little female which may also keep him very happy!
