How long should I keep pet turtles out of water??

I have pet pond turtles but I sometimes take them out of water to sunbathe. I am wondering if I can keep them out of water for days.

If your turtles home is set up correctly they will have a place to get out of the water whenever they want. They shouldn't be in an all water container at any time. They need to get out of the water to bask and warm up. If your keeping your turtles in a water filled aquarium I would urge you to correct this as soon as possible because that is not good for the turtles. Here is a great website when you can get info on the proper housing and care requirements for all types of turtles. http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/

I have pet turtles who live indoors. I fashioned an outdoor area for them to safely play in when the weather is nice. I used a plastic kiddie pool covered with a mesh screen to keep the neighbors cat from eating them. They should always have land and water available and I make sure that there is always an area of shade for them if they get too hot. Since they are reptiles, they rely on different environments to control their body temperature. If you remove them from the water and they can't get back to it when they get too hot, their body temp will literally keep inreasing till they die.

Do you provide your turtles with floating devices in the pond for them to personally climb onto to sunbathe? Otherwise, I wouldn't try leaving them out for days because being amphibians, they'll get dehydrated and die.
