My car is a 1999 Saturn. it passed inspection a couple of weeks ago.?

i thought I had fixed it because I replaced a small hose that had a hole in it. Before I fixed it, there was gas fumes coming out thru the vents. then after i replaced the hose everything was fine. I checked all of the lights and whatsoever but on saturday the check engine light came on again. Yesterday, It went off and I thought it was just a minor problem so I also check the fuses and they were all ok. I didn't change to another gas and just finished changing the oil. Spark plugs and wires were also changed not too long ago.Anyways, does anyone know why this light keeps coming on? One other thing to think about, When I took it to two different mechanics they automatically assumed it was a computer chip which was going to cost me 400 or so dollars. But then like I said, the lights went out when I changed the hose and had it passed inspection. your help will be apprecited before i make a mistake of spending too much money on something that doesn't need changing. Send reply soon.

engine lights can go on and off and still have a problem. you definatly have a problem. the codes will be stored in the computer so take the car to autozone or somewhere they can diagnose it. changing the hose and the light going off may have just been a coincedince. the car could be running right at times making it passable for emissions. good luck

First thing....Babyjones is wrong. A technician with the correct scantool can diagnose and clear the codes from your 99 Saturn. Autozone can give you the fault code that might be stored in your vehicles computer. The only problem is that the guys at Autozone are not technicians. After you get the code either post an update on here and I'll look it up at work or you can research what the code is showing. (just to let you know it is possible that your PCM is faulty. If 2 seperate places diag'd it.)
