The exixtence of Ms. Havisham would attest to that fact. She's loaded, but do you see her smiling? No. She's miserable and bitter. The only joy she gets is having Estella crush young boys' hopes and dreams. There are probably other examples, but it's been over 7 years since I read that book, and it really wasn't all that good to begin with.

Look at who the rich people are in the books:
Miss Havisham - mad as a hatter, living in her wedding dress, bringing up Estella as a revenge on men.
Estella - living with the results of that up bringing, unable to love
Bentley Drummle - a drunken lout
Pip - frittering away his inheritence on empty pleasures, knowing he is behaving badly and unable to stop

Write about Miss Havisham! If she isn't a testimony to the fact that money doesn't ensure happiness, I don't know who is.

Miss Haversham, obviously wealthy, who lives as a recluse and becomes insane.
Pip's benefactor, although he has money, is wanted by police and his enemies want to kill him.
Miss Haversham's ward as an adult, although wealthy, is soulless and very unhappy - tries to re-create Miss Haversham's lifestyle.
