Foils are opposites. Let's see . . . Who acts the opposite of someone else? Mercutio says, "If love be rough with you, be rough with love." Who would think the opposite of that statement? The nurse tells dirty jokes. Who would be shocked at that behaviour? Juliet is practical about how Romeo arrived under her balcony. Who would be the opposite of practical there? There's some help.

    1. What is the literary theme of Romeo and Juliet? Redemption! 2. What is a modern event that exemplifies the feud in the opening scene? The nuclear standoff between Iran and America. 3. Where did Romeo meet Juliet? In the town square. 3. Why was Romeo banished? For inciting to riot against the ruling family. 4. Who is Juliet sworn to marry? Sillian. 5. Waht was the resolution that Friar Lawrence offered Juliet? To have her become a nun. 6. How was Friar Lawrence’s plan foiled? Bartholomew and Balthazar kidnapped her on the way to the castle's keep. 7. Is Romeo Independent or Dependent? Dependent. He needs the help of everyone around him and rarely thinks for himself. For example, when the ball is over, he cannot decide whether to go home or try to find Juliet. It is up to Balthazar to make the decision for him. Honest or Dishonest? Honest to a fault. He cannot help but tell Juliet's family about them, even knowing that they will have his family banished from the city. Passive or Aggressive? Quite passive. Without Balthazar, Juliet never would have been kidnapped. Selfish or Generous? Generous. Giving his wordly posessions away just before eloping with Juliet, even though he'll be a newlywed just starting out is a sign of this. Direct or Manipulative? A mix! He can be quite direct, as when he interacts with Scheherezade, yet sneaky, as when he tells the Friar that Lady Grenadierre wants to meet with him to get him out of the apothecary's shop! Calculating or Impulsive? Very calculating. His plan to implicate Lady Grenadierre and the Friar in the murder of Catorze took a lot of planning. Merciful or Unforgiving? Merciful, as when he lets Grobert live after their fight. Happy or Sad? Happy - he and Juliet can be together forever!

Not going to give you act, scene, and line, but I'll try to help anyway.

A foil character is either one who is in most ways opposite to the main character or nearly the same as the main character. The purpose of the foil character is to emphasize the traits of the main character by comparison or contrast.

    So:

    * Who is the main character?

    * What are his or her traits?

    * What characters exhibit the opposite traits?
