Can liberals shed some light on this?
What exactly do the liberals fear from the so called religious right? Other than abortion, which could be mostly solved by people being responsible, I can't see anything else that would affect any rights of our citizens as a result of someone being religious. Morals? Which ones do you not agree with? Just curious to know, and this is coming from person who considers himself not to be that religious.
You could disagree with me but I contend that we closer to a socialist state than a religious one. Both would have controls, so I guess one would have to decide which is worse. I don't think we would ever be force to go to church, but if the govt controlled all your paycheck, then........

well... not only would it be the whole moral thing but you have to throw in the biggie... responsibility. They are the party of blame... it is always someone elses fault... Bush is the current pinata... the next President is in the on-deck circle.

I wouldn't call it fear, but I think it has to do with basing everything on faith instead of logic though they sometimes come to the same conclusions. I know there are many who are religious and political and keep the two separate. I'm moderately religious maybe a bit less, but i feel that upholding the constitution is more important than forcing my morals on others. I have no real opinion on abortion, but my main reason for being liberal is how i feel the country should be governed. This should be a nation for all the people in my opinion not just the rich. I think that the democrats provide a much more viable ability to support the poor and middle class than do the republicans. Foriegn policy has never really been a strong suit of the republican party. That is what made Bill Clinton a great president he could go someplace and speak his way through the situation. I want to also add that moral politician is an oxymoron so i don't believe either party is that much moral than the other.

First off, it's not fear.
Speaking for myself and my friends and family, what angers us is the religious right trying to impose their beliefs, morals and way of life on everyone.
I have nothing against religion...many people benefit from having a faith in something or someone...what I resent are those trying to force it down my throat...
As for morals, non-believers have the same morals as believers do...they are self motivated, if you will, and don't relay upon a "higher power" to scare the crapola out of them to force morality.
As to the effect of on our rights; many so-called religious right people are always trying to bring religion into the public pervue - prayer in school, creationism into the classroom - thinigs like that. Those things threaten the separation of church and state - but the right are zealous in their efforts to make everyone in their own image.
I feel religion should be kept where it belongs; in the church or temple, in the home and in the heart. That's where it should be.

Religious bondage shackles and debilitates the mind and unfits it for every noble enterprise, every expanded prospect.
James Madison
Religion flourishes in greater purity, without than with the aid of Government.

In no instance have... the churches been guardians of the liberties of the people.

I have recently been examining all the known superstitions of the world, and do not find in our particular superstition (Christianity) one redeeming feature. They are all alike founded on fables and mythology.
Thomas Jefferson
Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear.
Thomas Jefferson
That seems to cover it for me. Worship all you like privately... as I do... do not try and make government a tool of your God they occupy different roles.

its not just the liberals, and its too bad everyone has to have a label, but their afraid of increased censorship, more hypocrisy than there already is, ect. the super religious cant keep their beliefs to themselves, they want to have everyone else believe as they do. if you dont, your wrong. if they dont try to influence you, they are going against their basic principles, which is to spread the word. if you look thru out history, youll notice that church and state dont jell. its too bad, because one can learn from the other. you cant learn anything when you know it all. unfortunatly both do, and thats why the separation.

The mixing of religion and government is what worries liberals. The constitution guarantees freedom of religion but if the party in power is particular gun-ho over on a particular religion, they could seek to impose that on everyone. That wouldn't be very fair, now would it?
Also, so-called "morals" are not always so objective and easy to pin down. What's moral to one person isn't always moral to another. For example, a right-wing Christian may think that homosexuality is the height of immorality, while a liberal may think that the killing of Iraqi civilians is the height of immorality. I think government should stay out people's personal lives altogether, not just on the issue of abortion.

The religious right somehow got the idea that the US was a religious state, and that their own religious beliefs should be sanctioned and supported by the government, e.g. prayer in public schools, and a "religious test for civil office" should be instituted, as Bush tried to do for his SCOTUS appointments, which is specifically forbidden in the Constitution, BTW.
If you want prayer in school, set up your own &%$#! schools, like the Catholics did. Don't take my tax money to pay for your own prayers. If it's good enough for the biggest church in the country, the Catholics, it ought to be good enough for fundamentalists. You don't own my country.

I highly believe in separation of church and state.
We live in a nation of many religions and to let one control would be in violation of the rights of the others.
I do not fear religious people- I fear what they can do to religious people of a different faith.

I don't like the "religious right" for example telling me that gays are immoral (and then they are getting caught with their hands in the pants of young men) And please don't tell me I'm a big homo - because I'm a happily married hetero.
I don't like the religous right telling me how to live my life. It isn't about being religious - it is about trying to tell me how to live my life - and then continually getting caught doing what they preach is wrong.
I'm all for people having a spiritual background - free of judgement of others - who may have different beliefs. I can't stand the whole my god is right and yours is wrong.

the "so called-religious right" want to make Christianity the national religion and ban everything else...
that would kind of put a crimp in my freedom...
if you don't want to do that, then you're not part of the "religious right"... many religous people aren't part of the religous right...
it starts with prayer in schools... forcing people to pray to their God... then once you do that, really it's just expanding on that one idea, forcing religon into every aspect of your life...

It sounds like you believe that conservatives = religious people.
And liberals= heathens. That's another lie of the propoganda
media. I don't like the term liberal, but I am a left wing (another
term that means nothing.) so I guess I am a liberal. The Lord
God is extremely liberal-He forgives, He gives-He protects-
He gives without concern. I call that liberal: So yes, I am both
a born again Christian and a Liberal. BUT I would never
agree with the Conservative bunch in Washington right now.
I am working hard to get rid of them!!!
