First check out the Sims2 website to see if there are any patches for that particular game. http://thesims2.ea.com/update/?pid=Help_patches

There might be issues with the ability of your computer to handle the program. When I used to play my Sims2 on my laptop I found that it lagged and dragged and eventually froze completely because the computer just wasn't able to handle it.

I was able to work around it by going into the options menu (the "*" asterisk) on the menu screen when in neighborhood or family mode. From there I chose to minimize the quality of the graphics, sound, turned off shadows & reflections as well as the in game "vignettes" that play during special moments, I think they call it "special event camera" and the picture in picture option for special events. Once I set a lot of these options to the minimal setting it did run a bit better.

Check out the Sims2 Community BBS sometimes other users have great tips for improving game play.

Another option is to look into the specifications http://www.ehow.com/how_3054_find-much-memory.html

for your computer and compare them to the requirements for your game, http://thesims2.ea.com/help/detail.php?help_id=21

you might need to upgrade your video or some other drivers. Or it could be your memory/ram and that isn't so easy or cheap to solve.

One possible quick fix to try is to try & clean up your hard drive. Using scan disk and defrag and the drive clean up tools to free up drive space. Clear your cookies and temp caches. All that stuff takes up space and can slow it down. Before doing this I recommend being very careful and following all instructions carefully so you don't wreck your comp. http://www.nanc.com/support/winhowto/scandefrag.ph...

If still experiencing trouble then you might also want to check out the Sims2 website for their link to the EA games help/support for Sims2. http://support.ea.com/cgi-bin/ea.cfg/php/enduser/h...

Sims 2 is a very large game. Wants to bascially "take over" your PC. Freezing is most likely due to other applications running, not enough RAM, not a good enough display adapter and prehaps your PC just not being powerful enough.

Do not rub your disc with alcohol, if its freezing its not going to make a difference and it will possibly destroy the disc.

This same thing happens to me. I went and bought a ram upgrade and it works like a charm.

Also go to...gamefaqs.com in the faqs section its got some great tips including turning down hardware acceleration, and graphics.
