Del Shannon, but the Bon Jovi song is great too.
I have the newspaper clipping of his death notice in a scrap book I got from my grandmother.
His real name is/was Charles Weedon Westover-Ross.
According to my grandmother he was alienated from that side of his family and didn't use the -Ross part after a certain point in his life.

Del Shannon was his professional name he used, but he was actually born...Charles Weedon Westover. He had a few hits, but Runaway was his biggest hit in 1961. In February of 1990, he shot himself in the head with a rifle after a long spell with mental illness and alcohol. He was one of my faves from the 60's.

"Runaway" is a song by Jon Bon Jovi, sometimes incorrectly attriuted to Bon Jovi, the band he started after this song became a hit. His real name is John Bongiovi.
There are many other songs called this as well, though.
