You can use simple needle nose to get the tag off- however I wouldn't recommend it. Those tags are individually coded, when you or your parents bought those goats they were recorded- I don't know how they do it for goats but for dairy cattle, there is a computer registration, sort of a way to microchip to keep track of who owns the animal to prevent theft. The code that is on that tag should also be tattooed in the mouth or ear and it is also checked upon sale.

By removing that tag you make your goat friends an easier target for theft, especially if you have dairy or meat goats.

I live in dairy central and as a vet I've seen cases where teenagers have stolen cattle and goats and tried to take them to a sale. Luckily, they had their ear tag code in their mouth and on their ears and the owner's were contacted. This potentially saved their owners- thousands of dollars.

The metal ear tags are there for a reason, usually they indicate a required vaccination has been done. The tags are not damaging the goat so you should leave them on. If it's the same tag as they put on cattle, it doesn't weigh enough to make the ears hang low.
