When people refer to an "R-reg" they are talking about the age of the car. from 1983 - 2001 all UK number plates' first letters refered to the year they were registered. E.G r-reg is a car registered in 1997. the website below will help u.

the old style number plates were a letter, 2-3 numbers, 3 letters ie A123 BCD If that was the plate it would be an A reg (registration) because that is the lone letter.

for example r reg would be 97/98 s reg would be 98/99 t reg would be 99/00 basicically they go in alphabetical order by year .

The first letter in a car's registration lets you know the age of the vehicle as all cars made in a single year share the same first letter.
