Is Brian Cashman the most underachieving executive in sports today?

The Yankees have a payroll that is almost twice that of their nearest competitor. They have resources that give them a tremendous advantage on the field. Yet they have not been to the World Series since 2000. Do you put the responsibility on Cashman and Steinbrenner?

Update:

Yeah, I meant they hadn't won since 2000. And you have to be kidding me that they are doing fine. They have twice the resources of eveyone else, and their pitching staff couldn't get me out. Someone is dropping the ball bigtime.

No doubt. Put most other GM's on a team that can spend $200 million dollars and they will do much much better. The start of the train wreck is Steinbrenners fault but the most recent years are all Cashman.

It's easy to criticize him when most of the pitching staff is on the DL.

And their payroll is 30% more than the second highest, not twice a high.

I'd say that it is hard to judge Cashman as a GM because his job is different than other GMs. He hasn't really had to worry about a budget. Even though he has brought the payroll down for 3 straight years it has always been understood that if someone breaks down they can go out and get someone to replace them.

How can you be underachieving when you don't do anything?? He is George's puppet, & will be his scapegoat when the Yankees don't win the World Series again this year. Until George dies he will run the team, the only reason there is a GM, is so he has someone to blame for his poor decisions. We won't have any idea how good Cashman is until he's given control to run a team himself.

Brian Cashman definitely isn't getting the job done that's for sure.

It's not about how much money you spend, but about how you spend it. The Twins and the A's, for example, have been successful for a number of year now, despite being small revenue teams. The Orioles have spent and spent and spent for almost 2 decades now, and haven't come close to winning anything since 1992.

If you really want examples of underachieving GM's, look to KC and Pittsburgh.
