Can someone plesase tell me why some people think black and white people have a specific way of talking?

Over the last 23 years I have found myself being constantly told that I talk like a white person or am perceived to want to be white. I am just curious as to how it is that white people speak that is so different from black people. Essentially if we are American shouldn't we all speak English with one accent or another depending on what region one is from.

Update:

Now alot of you have tried to sell me on the ideal that black people do sound completely different than whites. I will grant that some people (both black and white) speak broken Englis.

I disagree completely with whomever said that black people over pronounce their words. When you say black people do this or white people do that you are making a generalization.

As a product of my upbringing I was encourage to be the antithesis of stereotypes and do just "do me". This manifests itself in my manner of speaking and in several other aspects of existence.

With that said I am closing this issue! Thank for your attempts at shedding some light one the subject.

Some people stereotype others and when the stereotype isn't met, they get frustrated.

Of course black and white people have different ways of speaking. Have you ever been in a black neighborhood? Don't pretend you don't know this so that you can fight of a lame stereotype. It exsists whether you choose to believe it or not, and if you either don't know this or don't care you must have been living under a rock not to notice. I'm not defending that you were thought to speak like a white person by, who I assume to be black people, but there does exist differences.

I am forever told that "I speak well, or you speak so differently", and it's always said by a white. When they say this, I feel like pouring a bucket of scoulding water over their head because who are they to decide how "well I speak"? There! How about that Mr. Fung?!

What they are really saying is "you talk so white" like what's it mean to talk white??? Blah, jibberish...most of what I hear is ignorance and let me tell you it gets old very quickly.

I talk like I talk because I am product of my upbringing. If I was raised in a more urban city type atmosphere, I'd speak more urban; if down south, then more with twang; if I was raised with the Canucks, the accent would be a trite different; same with Jamaican, "man".

At least I don't speak "WELL" like an ignorant hillbilly with a straw hanging out of the side of his mouth and buck gap teeth, right? Blah, it's all so old and as ignorant as hillbillies.

I hate to say this, but remember "Buck Wild" from Flava Flave? I had to turn the channel...as fake and hoish as they come, that dumb hillbilly.

That's funny. I talk proper (although, I do slip in and out of the vernacular) and nobody has ever told me I sound White. Not that I would have a problem with that.

blacks do sound different. what is funny is that no matter where you go blacks sound the same.

"I am just curious as to how it is that white people speak that is so different from black people."

LOL it's not how we speak it's how we pronounce our words. just go listen to an asian/middle eastern/hispanic/native, born and raised in the states. notice the similarities to whites? now go listen to a black person. no offense but I can ALWAYS tell if the customer rep on the other end of the phone is black. ALWAYS.

what's funnier is when blacks over-pronounce words. it's like they try not to sound like a black person but just make it worse by over-pronouncing words. it's always the last word they do it to.

I have no idea, I had not known this to happen before you told me. It may be because you act like a group of people who are stereotypically white (e.g. prep, nerd, etc.)? Very strange.
