My self i would wash it first just to be on the safe side, if you bought it from a shop where it was just on display, then anybody could of put that in there mouths not the hygienic thing to do if you don't wash it first really is it. Everything i buy i wash it first because you never know.

Yep... the thing is that it must have germs, bacteria etc on it from the shop, transporting, other people touching it .... and its only hygienic to clean it before cooking with it.

Just run a bit of water + washing up liquid over it and a light wash should do it. Dry it straight after and then wipe it again before use. Job done

Yes, give it a wash, dry it, then oil it (not machine oil)!!!Probably wise not to put it in a dishwasher. Then again, they're cheap as chips so if it splits after a few years you could replace it.

To be environmentally sound though, just hand wash it, then it should last forever. I am using the one my grandmother used for a bazillion years before she died 20 years ago.

I usually give all utensils and plates/pots a quick wash

just in case there is dust or something.
