Ants in coffee pot...?

I kind of have a little ant problem in my kitchen. For some reason, the ants are always getting into my coffeemaker. They crawl into the water reservoir mostly. It's so annoying!

I even bought a new coffee pot and moved it to the kitchen table, on the other side of the kitchen. Within a week or two, the ants found their way over there, too.

Any idea why they keep getting into it?

Also, any surefire ant deterrants/killers?

Thanks.

Ants don't care for mint or citrus, cloves or bay leaves, so think orange peel, peppermint tea, lemon juice, ground cloves, etc. If you can plant mint around the foundations of your home, you may deter them from entering. Vinegar has the same acid as citrus, so use it to clean with and ants won't feel welcome. (It probably erases or overpowers the odor trail other ants have left for them to follow.)

Clean bench tops and cupboards down really well, and then wipe down with a clean damp cloth that has a few drops of essential peppermint oil on it, you may need to apply a few drops of oil a couple of times.

Ants hate the smell of it and it is also environmentally friendly, and safe for humans and children, and no residue powders etc to clean up. And the big bonus is that the room smells fresh and minty. I also want to add that you can put the oil on a cotton ball after cleaning and put in the areas you have ants and that should help too...replace once the smell is gone.

    I hope this is helpful,Good Luck!!! :)

Cinnamon, bay leaves, vinegar... all nifty ideas... but...

First of all, you know why they're coming in. They're after the water.

Second, you need to know where the colony is.

Third, you need to eliminate, not deter, the colony.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

Start by squashing one of the ants. Crush it into oblivion with a finger. Now sniff your finger. If your finger stinks like burnt oranges/green monster energy drink/rotten coconut/deet then what you have is the famous Odorous House Ant... and that means you've got trouble.

First: Don't even attempt to repel the ants. At best, it'll work temporarily. At worst, you'll cause their colony to "bud" and form two new ones somewhere in your house. Don't spray them with raid, lysol, windex, bleach or anything else. If there are more ants than you can stand, use a clean, wet sponge and wipe them away and wash them down the sink.

The best way to deal with those ants is to hire a professional who will use a product called Phantom. On the outside he/she can also use Termidor. The combination is a miracle-cure for ant problems.

You can also try baiting them yourself using a gel-type bait containing Fipronil. Follow the directions but don't be cheap with the stuff.

All other types of ants are usually cured quickly with Terro bait. Remember, though... Terro and most other gel baits are only good for 4 days and have to be re-applied. Also - ants will go crazy for the bait so expect to see more ants until the colony is wiped-out.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can also reduce the chances of getting ants inside by:

Keeping branches of bushes and trees trimmed away from the house. Controlling excess or pooling water near your home. Keeping tight control on the number of aphids in your roses (ants tend them and milk them like they were cows). Keeping any mulch within 2' of your house less than 2" deep.

    In conclusion:

Keep your coffee pot dry. Bait the ants. Reduce the conditions condusive outside. Don't make the ants angry by spraying them. Call a professional if all else fails.

Ants love anything warm particularly kettles, so mix up a solution of one part tea tree oil to 5 parts water in a spray bottle you can spray your benches and the side of kettles, coffee pots, tea and coffee mugs safely then wipe residue off, safe around babies and animals, spray it before you go to bed always empty the remainder water out of a kettle before you sleep and rinse out with cold tap water this will repel the ants and they won't want to go back there.

    Here's my tip....

Put your coffee pot on a plate with water...

so that when the ants try to enter your coffee pot they will drown!!!! Hahahaha!!! it is effective....

It is also effective on sugar pots or container....

    :-)
