Turn off External Hard Drive via Software?
I have a Western Digital external HD that I access only a few times a week for backups. It has a rather loud fan that I find annoying, so I'd like to be able to turn it off when not in use. I don't want to have to unplug it and plug it back in every time.
Is there some software out there that will do this for me? Maybe even just disable the USB port?

The short answer is no.
Even if you disabled the USB port the drive will still make noise because the power is connected.
You physically have to switch off the power for the noise to stop.

Doesn't your external hard drive have an on/off switch? My EHD (can't rememeber the brand) puts an icon in the task bar (near the clock). When I want to turn it off, I right-click on the icon, and a window pops up that says, "Unplug or eject hardware." I follow the steps until I can turn the drive off with the switch on the case. In fact, I'm not supposed to disconnect the drive without doing this.
I'd suggest you do use a search engine to see if there's something like what I described for your EHD.

They can put in a bigger HD but laptops only have 1 drive. You might be better off and cheaper getting an external USB Hard Drive. In addition, you'd have to load your Operating System on it again because it can't transfer. PS: Hard drives don't have memory, they have Space. Sarge
