The most humane way to rid of the ants is to hose down their nest well, for about 4 minutes every day once in the morning and in the evening for total of 8 minutes ever day for 7 days.
Depending of the size of the population, it may take less than 5 days.
That what our city bug expert told us.
Cayenne pepper are not recommend since it can not only kill the ants, but kill other insects that eats bugs as well (ladybugs, dragonflys, spiders, etc). We would be destroying our allies against these miserable persistant ants

you probably have carpenter ants if they are the big black ones or pavement ants if they are the little brown ones...either way, buy yourself a bag of Sevin dust, use it with either a dust puffer or a loose brush like a feather duster. Dust around your door or where you see ants walking. The ants walk across the dust and die or take it back to the nest and die. You should see less ants in a few days...or a total elimination. For inside, dust under sinks. Don't leave pet food out or trash, this draws the ants.

Don't try the chalk thing. That DOES NOT WORK! I've tried already and it didn't work at all as they crossed the line. Vaseline may help though. I have the same problem and have had this problem for some time too. I've tried the chalk thing and I've tried the whole spray bottle with the peppermint oil/water mixture and that don't even work. I wanted a solution that was pet and environment friendly and heard from an "exterminator" that the water/peppermint oil mixture would help, the same one even said about the Vaseline. I have to do something myself about my ant problem too as they started biting me when I got home (the little brown ants and YES they DO bite).

You can buy poisons like amdro, etc or try hot soapy water or grits. If the kids are playing outside and they get into those little fire ants, I pour hot soapy water on the mound until I can get something else. I really haven't proved that the soapy water works totally, but at least it gives the kids a break for the afternoon! I got the idea from wasps nests, knock them down with the soapy water and they will not build again. Supposedly grits are taken back into the nest and when digested, it swells and kills them.

borax is very poisionous to ants. sprinkle it around the nests and it will reduce their numbers. diatomaceous earth is another way to kill ants. it erodes the ant's shells and they dry up.
however, one might want the ants around. several ant's nests will keep termites from invading a home. some kinds of ants can become unwelcome guests though. fire ants are tiny, but can sting. carpenter ants are large and black and live in wood. argentine ants are small and although a nusiance if one dislikes incects, they are harmless. the best way to keep ants from living inside a house is to allow house spiders to establish themselves. of course, one has to get used to the sight of spiders, although these sorts generally remain out of sight.
the technological approach is to get an exterminator involved, but one has to accept the fact the local environment is going to be soaked with pesticides. however, modern pesticides tend to be less dangerous to humans than the sorts exterminators once used.

Ants absolutely hate the smell of peppermint. Get some essential oil of Peppermint and poor several drops of it into their nests. They'll soon tire of this and move on.

It is very important what kind of ants you have. If it is an invasive or a native. Mind you however these little kretins are aerating your soil and turning over decaying matter which is hugely beneficial to your back-yard environment. If they're not stinging you, I would let them be. However, there are better means to controlling them with tons of a poison dumped into your yard. Try dumping some boiling water on the nest or soapy water, but not too much cause that isn't great for your yard too. If you are really bothered you can call your local exterminator for advice or better yet find the closest college university and ask for the Urban Entomology Department or the Entomological Extension Agent. They will love to discuss the species and ramification of treatment. And you will likely learn something new about some very fascinating creatures in your backyard. Or a can of raid will kill them too.

get some ant powder they walk through and take it back to the nest or you pour boiling water over the nest but it only kills the ones that are on the surface but it will do as a temporary solution until you get some ant powder
