The Brand New Heavies?
When the group debuted in the late 80's early 90's they had this girl as the lead singer who is also in the video that they have out now "i don't know why i love you". But I saw a video for Sometimes and Siedah Garrett was singing. When and why did she join and leave the group.

Joined in 1997, the next album was released in 2000 - they then had a new vocalist.
She left in 1998 to concentrate on solo writting and singing.

The original singer you're thinking of is N'Dea Davenport. She left the band and went solo in 1995 - Siedah Garrett replaced her in 1996, and cut an album with them in '97. N'Dea Davenport rejoined the band in 2005, but I'm not exactly sure why Siedah left.
I do know that Siedah has a new single with the Freemasons (earthy funky rare-groove house music), as their previous vocalist is gone.
