If you mean the Smoketown neighborhood, it is a questionable area just southeast of downtown. It has been an area with a high crime rate and poverty, but the former housing projects just north of Smoketown have been demolished and are being rebuilt as a mixed-income area.

There are many other neighborhoods less safe than Smoketown, but Smoketown is not necessarily the safest. Personally, I would not have a problem being in the neighborhood during daylight hours, but would likely avoid it at night.
