    To become a Top Contributor, you must answer at least 50 questions in one particular Y!A category within 30 days and receive Best Answers on at least 10% of those answers. Also, your qualifications for being a Top Contributor are always being evaluated in the backgrounds, so keep up your efforts because even when you get the badge, it's possible to lose it if you no longer qualify.

    It isn't how many questions you answer. It is based on best answers you get. If you are proficient in a certain field you get a top contributor banner for that. I am really good at being a smart@ss, so I have a TC in P&S. You are pretty good at a lot of categories. If you stick to the one category and get a pile of bests in that, you should pick up the orange banner soon. The only problem that I can foresee, is that you have a huge number, being in level 7, and it may be tougher for you to get that banner based on percentage. Most people in the 7's don't have an orange banner. It seems to be tougher to keep, even at a 7 or 8% best answers in a specific category. But if you keep getting best in P&S, you should pick it up in no time ;o}

    Yahoo Answers team has been purposefully secretive of the exact formula, but it appears to be a combo of the total # of answers and the total # of best answers that you get for a category. It's the absolute #, not the percentage that matters (although, there may be a minimum threshold of Best Answer % - prob 10%). You can earn Top Contributor status in up to 3 categories, and they are dynamic - meaning that you can gain or lose them from week to week.

    The new badges are awarded every week (Sunday midnight, PST), and apparently they weight recent activity more. This link provides a bit more info on it.
