Things I would want in a new PC.......

8000 series video card(the best that you can afford)

    2 GB DDR2 memory(1 GB would do)

    Core 2 Duo processor

At least 1 SATA II hard drive ( 2 in RAID would be better)

A quality motherboard.....ASUS and BFG are pretty good ones.

If you would like more info, email me at my profile or post on my Yahoo! 360 page.

I would start by buying a few magazines. In the UK we have three decent ones on the subject; Computer Shopper (used to be my primary offline index of prices) Custom PC(Does what it says on the tin) Micro Mart(a general mag) The Custom PC mag is a great source of info for building good rigs. Online look at places like Tomshardware (google it) You will also need to be confident enough to play with high cost, breakable by static, components. I would suggest dismantling and rebuilding a few no longer required PC's first to gain a little practice. This would also be a good place to learn about installing your OS to work at it's most optimum. That is setting up Widows or Linux to run games as efficiently as possible. For example, partitioning hard drives, making registry edits, tweaking graphics cards and the bewildering world of overclocking. Join a local computer club. They are great sources of info and generally full of nerds and geeks who after pouring their scorn on you will be more than happy to help. Another little tip.... Never ever find yourself without an internet capable machine at hand. When (not IF) your games rig goes down you can use the other machine to find out why and get the cure. Only when you are confident enough and feel ready do you start shopping for components. You should never compromise on price either. Buy cheap buy twice! Things like power supplies are often over looked. People buy cheap ones then bin or sell cheaply all their other components when it goes wrong only to make the same mistake on their next build. I don't mind as I get cheap stuff this way.

When people post a question like this, they need to give a budget. You know, the most you want to spend on the computer.

I could make you a $500 budget game machine, or a $3000 ultimate gaming masterpiece. But, I wont waste my time because Im not sure how much you can spend.
