A trick question I need help on. ^__^ It's fun but HARD!?

Ok. I need someone to help me with this brain-teaser:

"There was once an old man who lived by himself and never left his home. The only time anyone ever visited him was when his food and supplies were delivered, but they never came inside. Then one stormy winter night when an icy gale was blowing, he had a nervous breakdown. He went upstairs, turned off all the lights and went to bed. Next morning, he had caused the deaths of several hundred people. How?"

I need an answer, guyz! And please don't tell me that you "don't know." [Only smart ppl are allowed to answer this one.] Are u smart enough? ;)

Okay, thanks, now this is driving me crazy, Maybe when he turned off all the lights, he turned off everyones and they froze to death. Or maybe he had the only house, and since they never came inside, they froze, I was trying to link it to the nervous breakdown, but if he never left his house, then how could that work? I had to give my opinion on this .
