They do it for the spin. You gotta spin the ball to trick and make it more difficult for the opponent to return the ball.

Some coaches tell their beginner students to imagine they are drawing a number "8" with their racquets as they hit. This is so that they can learn the proper technique, spin the ball (topspin) get the ball higher above the net (to avoid leaving the ball in the net and lose the point)

In Tennis pretty much every single ball has some sort of spin. This is to trick the oponent and make it difficult for him/her.

Also think of the natural movement of your arms and shoulders. If you hit the ball all straight from back(side) to front) your arm would abruptly come to a full stop and you'd have the risk of an injury on your shoulders.

But if you hit with the proper movement and swing (bottom to top) your arm would simply follow the natural movement of your arm which is "circles".

Two things can affect this: You might be holding the racket at a 45 degree angle which makes the ball go further in the air when you hit it. This sometimes makes you seem like your hitting it too hard. Also, you might not be getting any topspin. This is where you make the ball spin forwards so it come comes back own when your hitting it hard. My suggestion is to go to a coach and ask him/her how to do topspin or just hit the ball slower Good luck, Jesse

well they do this by putting top spin on the ball sometimes ,and having the racket not facing up when they hit the ball. The ball just slips pber the net by a couple of cm.

one simple reason for all those things....top spin....the down to up motion creates it and topspin prevents the ball from going out as easily
