You have to plug in the decoder... It will give you a code and you can look at this book and it will tell you what's wrong with your car.

Sounds like wires are crossed causing a misfire, which will trigger a light. Particularly if the rough idle wasn't there before. A Chilton's manual will show a plug wire diagram so that can be correcte. The check engine light should then go out since problem solved.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Most likely the re-gapping didn't do anything. He probably disconnected the battery when he re-gapped them. This will reset the light but it will come back on since the problem wasn't solved.

From experience, I can say with 90% certainty that he has the firing order wired wrong. Small mistake but it certainly makes a difference. It is also possible that he may have cracked the insulation on one of the plugs when installing them. These mistakes are very easy to make and fix, but you gotta take some time to figure out what went wrong.

you really ought to take it to a shop and have them do a computer diagnostics on it. They can pin point it better. There are a few valves and hoses and such that it could be but can't tell from what you have described.

Also, make sure the right wires are on the right plugs. Getting them mixed up will cause this problem, especially if you say it was idling ok before he did this.

You might have mixed up the ignition sequence wires o the distributor cap, you might need a new distributor cap....Or directly under the cap, itself, you can find the ignition timer, a rectangular shaped metal box, with a couple of wires that go into two different slots....More than likely, you need a new one of those....About 20 bucks at Checker Auto.

Take it Auto Zone and have them scan it.That will clear the code and they will be able to tell you what the problem is.Are the wires on the right plugs?Just go have it scanned. Its free.

Pay the fifty or sixty dollars to run a diagnosis on it, or you will be wasting your money, did the same thing as you and after replacing almost everything, turned out to be sensor, bummer.

You need to scan it but I bet you have one or more O2 sensors bad.
