Do you hit dogs to correct them?

Are your aware that hitting is the least effective way to correct, and creates a dog that is more likely to bite a stranger or child when in a stressful or fearful situation

Gently holding your dogs muzzle so he is faced to look at you while you look him directly in the eye and scold him sternly ( not screaming or raising your voice shouting ) will have a far more impact in letting the dog you are dissapointed than striking them.

Your hands should be used to praise, comfort and provide pleasure when they learn only that they have less fear or worry about another person touching them and won't feel threatened someone swing an torward them, for example a newspaper boy handing you a newspaper or has worry if a toddler goes to hug the dog. For dogs that have learn hands or swing arms can cause pain there is a greater chance that they will react defensively and potentially bite someone just because of how they view the arm movement.

Update:

This lesson was taught to me 40 years ago by Mr Eisenmann owner and trainer of the dogs that starred in the Littlest Hobo, he decided it was important to let people know that a person can teach a dog without physical correction so travel across US and Canada putting on shows,

his dogs with a vocabulary of 1,000 words, the dogs responded correctly to spelled sentences containing commands- and did this faster than people who volunteered to compete with them in the exercise!

From the first canine that he owned to assist him in operating a night club, Eisenmann learned that a dog has the capacity to think by means of three words: faith, respect, and attitude. Dogs can distinguish between colors. They can understand the same word in different languages. They can agree or decline, entirely from their own assessment of potential hazards, to undertake a particular task.

Hitting a dog only shows that the owner is uneducated, incompetent, or out of control.

It does absolutely nothing beneficial, and much that is detrimental.

    Thanks for the post!

Dogs also understand, and thereby respond to, vocabulary much better when it is spoken or even whispered, than when it is shouted.

check out these videos of dogs and their owners, and see the bond between them. These dogs are trained totally by a fun, and positive method. On about page 5, there are children showing what their own dogs can do..One will *never* have that bond and understanding if they hit> http://video.google.com/videosearch?client=firefox...

Although dogs shouldn't be attributed with having human characteristics, they are intelligent enough to be able to understand the concept of, and execute, certain actions that their owners require of them - if these actions are asked in a way that dogs find rewarding. So, with this rule in mind, owners have to be clever as well and find a way of training their dog that actually works quickly and efficiently. The eBook I wrote explains how to achieve this ideal - how to speak “dog” so that you’re able to communicate effectively with your four-legged friend.

As with any training, the best time to start is as soon as you get your new pet. The fundamentals for successful housetraining are:

    - Crate training is very important so it should be mastered.

    - A schedule is required for feeding and exercising.

    - Be vigilant and patient throughout the training period.

House training is most likely every dog owner’s top concern. And it should begin as soon as possible. That's the very first day your dog comes into your home. If you've adopted a new furry friend and spend months in the home without aiding him/her achieve success when it comes to training then s/he’s going to set a precedence that you now need to change. So, concentrate on prevention as opposed to cure. House training comes down to one

rather simple skill - being a good dog time manager. And this means managing your pup's time so that you let them have as few chances as possible to make house training blunders.

I'm not sure what fool made this up, but a fool he was. You should NEVER look a dog directly in the eye. You are challenging it and it may well turn on you.

If I ever saw anyone hit a dog I would report them even if it was my own brother. I have done so much work with abused animals I will not stand for any type of abuse and abuse this is for sure.

Sorry I don;t mean to be nasty or rude. It's wrong. Period!

never hit a dog!!! there are other ways you can get your point across.

    a) say no or something firmly but dont yell

    b) if they are wearing a leash give them a simple tug but not a hard pull

I agree that you shouldn't hit a dog. However, a light tap on the snout or rear works well. If you watch nature that is how a mother dog corrects her pup.

i no exactly what u mean...except we dont scold our dogs, we use positive reinforcement...clicker training(sis).

it makes me sick to here about ppl hitting dogs.

when my older sister was 12(?) she took her first dog to an obedience class of some sort....we never went back. when Blaze(her dog) wouldnt sit the instructor took the leash from her and yanked rlly hard up. Blaze snapped at him and it was just awful to watch. she was crying and...it was horrible...

All I have to do is change my voice to stern and they know. Violence never solves anything.
