Is this true about drug sniffing dogs?

Is it true that the police get the dogs hooked on the drug that the dog is searching for so they'll be able to sniff it out better? I've seen the videos and the dogs act frantic when they are sniffing for the drugs. I had never heard this before but, a plumber was out at my house today and told me that's what they do. How much truth is there to this?

People often wonder if dogs sniff out hidden drugs because they want to eat them, or because they're addicted to drugs themselves. In fact, the dogs have absolutely no interest in drugs. What they're actually looking for is their favorite toy. Their training has led them to associate that toy with the smell of drugs.

Most of those dogs are trained to alert to the scent of a drug but not go after the drug itself. However accidents could happen. I'm certain the handlers do everything the can to prevent accidents. However, if the dog got excited, it could happen. I'm sure it's rare and the dog is treated immediately. Dogs are just as susceptible to some of those drugs as humans are. This is why the dogs are trained to alert to a drug, not grab the drug. BUT, I'm sure it has happened in the past. Dogs get excited....

None. The dog sniffs out the drugs because he will be rewarded, usually by a brief bit of play-time with his partner and his favorite toy, when he finds the drugs.

unless that plummer has a degree in animal workfare and jobs, then don't listen to him. dogs are specially trained to sniff out the drug when the drugs are in some container or bag. police dogs would never dare to let their dogs get in direct contact with drugs. dogs' sense of smell are so much better than ours, they can smell the drugs when they're in the casing or wrapping.

He's a plumber! He's been playing in the poop so long he's FULL OF IT. Maybe he needs a plumber. Trainers do have to be careful so the dogs don't get hooked, but they are not trained to be hooked on the drugs.

Tell your plumber he needs to stick with what he knows-clogged drains and septic tanks! Drug-sniffing dogs, along with bomb-sniffing dogs(who get just as excited about their jobs-gee, wonder if their trainers blow their heads off with dynamite to make them want to find explosives?), termite-sniffing dogs, and other dogs that find contraband, are trained by rewarding them with a favorite toy or game(like tug-o-war)when they find what they're supposed to find. They get excited over the prospect of getting that toy.

no thats not true they are just trained on what the drug smells like then they either sit or scratch at what ever has drugs in it. Plumber was high poop fumes when he told you that.

They don't give drugs to the dogs, they just train them to react to the scent.

Not true at all...I think your plumber should stick to chasing poop
