What is the real maning of the song "Hotel California"?

Some say that it is about Satan.

Some say that it is about Drugs.

Even people interpret the meaning of the word "colitis" in many way.

"warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air...".

Other than getting more and more confused i could not find the answer till now.

Any body know the real meaning?

The lyrics of the song describe the title establishment, a hotel where "you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave". On the surface, the song is a tale of a weary traveler who becomes trapped in a nightmarish hotel that at first appeared tempting; as a metaphor the song may be commenting on drug addiction or simply the decadent lifestyle the hugely successful band had been caught up in. Another theory is that the song is about a mental hospital or a federal prison. The expression "check out" is also considered a euphemism for suicide. Per the band itself, they have been on record saying the song is literally about a man who "drove into hell" and can't find a way out.

Don Felder wrote the music, Don Henley wrote the words.

In an interview done for the April 2007 issue of Guitar World Acoustic magazine, the band members discuss in-depth the song tracks, and Hotel California is a "fire-and-brimstone, un-holier-than-thou autographical masterpiece in which Don Henley deals with the failure and success in his unending search for thye illusive muse.

"Alot of the lines are specifically about Don (Henley)'s relationship with (his girlfriend)"

It's about getting caught up in the hedonistic lifestyle of California in the '70s.

Where the hell would anyone get the idea that it's about Satan? And "colitis" is completely ridiculous ... hilarious.
