Greenies recipe?

My dog loves greenies and the vet said her teeth look a lot better since she started eating them, but they're so expensive. I was wondering if there is a recipe out there somewhere so I could make them instead of having to buy them. I've already searched the net with no luck. Thanks!

Update:

I don't buy the Greenies brand, I buy the Trader Joe's version that my vet recommended.

Update 2:

I didn't ask for opinion or commentary. If you don't have an answer for my question, please don't answer.

Update 3:

Once again: please don't answer if you don't have an answer to my question. I am fully aware of the pros and cons of this product and I am equally aware that greenies are not a substitute for brushing my dogs teeth.

    Hi Cheffy

I have not found the recipe for those Greenies but I know the ingredients.

I made a lot of homemade dog treats and bicuits. But the Greenies have the special ingredients like chlorophyll which helps to eliminate the bad breath and it also gives the green color.

Processed wheat gluten, glycerin, natural flavor, powdered cellulose fiber, monosodium phosphate, monoglycerides of edible fatty acids, magnesium stearate and chlorophyll. No artificial coloring added. No preservatives, and no plastics or other inert ingredients. Product appearance and color may vary due to natural ingredients. All ingredients are used in human food product

The only idea I have is to bake some veggie biscuits or treats and see if you can find the chlorophyll and some of the other ingredients above and mix it into the recipe:

    Here are some of mine:

    Vegetarian Dog Biscuits

    2 1/2 cups flour

    3/4 cup dry milk powder

    1/2 cup vegetable oil

    2 tbs. brown sugar

2 vegetable bouillon cubes; dissolved in

    3/4 cup boiling water

    1/2 cup carrots (optional)

    1 egg

Preheat oven to 300F. Mix all ingredients into a ball and roll out to about 1/4" thick. Cut with bone-shaped cookie cutter, or strips, or a cutter shape of your own choice. Place on ungreased cookie sheet and bake 30 minutes at 300F.

    Homemade Dog Bones

    2 cups whole wheat flour

    1/3 cup corn meal

    1/2 cup soy flour

    1/2 cup ground seeds

    1/2 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon linseed oil (available in health food stores)

    1 tablespoon vegetable oil

    1/4 cup unsulfured molasses

    2 eggs

    1/4 cup milk

Combine dry ingredients in a bowl. Mix to blend. Add the liquid ingredients. Stir, adding more milk if necessary to make a ball that can be kneaded and rolled out on a cutting board. Roll out dough, and cut out dog bone shapes using a cookie cutter or knife. Place on a well-greased baking pan, and bake at 350 F for 25 to 35 minutes, or until browne

    Garden Veggie Biscuits

1 cup old fashioned rolled oats

    1 cup regular yellow cornmeal

    3 cups whole wheat flour

1 cup wheat germ or bran

    2 teaspoons beef bouillion granules

    1 cup dry milk powder

2 large eggs, shells and all

    2 carrots

    3 cloves garlic

    2 cups broccoli chopped up

2 cups cooked meat fat & leftover meat or 1/2 cup vegetable oil

    1 teaspoon salt, optional

Combine all dry ingredients in a large bowl, stir to blend.

In a little water cook carrot, broccoli and garlic and meat scraps if using.

Cool and puree in a blender or chop finely in a food processor.Add eggs , shells and all and process until fairly smooth.

Add the puree mixture to the dry ingredients and add more warm water if needed to make a very stiff dough.

Roll dough to 1/2 inch thick on a board floured with whole wheat flour, and cut with a dog bone shape cutter or into squares etc. Place biscuits on a greased baking sheet and bake for about 2 hours at 300, turning every half hour, until dry and hard.

The last half hour of baking, mix some beef bouillion in warm water and dip the bones in this mixture, place back on the tray and continue baking.

This gives the bones a nice sheen and makes them smell great.

Makes about 6 pounds of biscuits

Dough keeps up to 1 week in the fridge and 3 months frozen

Not sure if I could help with my idea................

I think you misunderstand. Greenies are for improving bad breath, cleaning teeth is only a slight secondary benefit. As an analogy, I chew sugar free Eclipse gum and yes it freshens my breath, and because it is sugar free it doesn't cause tooth decay, but it doesn't get rid of plaque on my teeth. I still have to brush my teeth no matter how much sugar free gum I chew.

In the best interest of your dog's tummy, your wallet, and your dog's teeth, I would only use greenies sparingly. One every other day.

The best thing to do is to brush your dog's teeth. If you can only get around to doing it twice a week, that's better than not at all. Greenies are no substitute for a toothbrush, even if they are shaped like one. You don't need to buy special toothpaste. Just a wet toothbrush is good enough

Greenies are great for teeth, but for most dogs, they aren't so good for the stomach and the gastrointestinal tract. Some dogs can eat them forever and have a completely healthy life, but for many dogs that I see, being given greenies as treats is very common in dogs who later develop tummy issues. There are plenty of other treats out there which will do just as good at keeping your dog's teeth healthy and clean, and the good news is, most of these things are WAY cheaper than greenies are! I can't really answer your question as far as a recipe is concerned, but I know for a fact that if you check out your local pet store or consult your vet, you will find many other products which will do the same as greenies for the teeth, without all of the gastrointestinal problems occuring later.

I don't know if you can actually make them yourself.... however, I use to work at Petco and even though they seem to do good with the dogs teeth, they are not good for the digestion of the dog. I heard it was bad for them. Take it as you will....
