Do Microsoft updates change your default programs?

Certainly yes! Microsoft is little possessive on its users, especially on the products on which Microsoft is also a market bearer, therefore whenever it gets chance to change defaults on any computer, it changes to microsoft products, but sometimes its shows courtesy of asking to whether to change or not.

Well about antivirus, Microsoft donot hold any market in antivirus business, so keep using without any problem.

Yes, they can change the settings of Microsoft products. By the way, it is ALWAYS recommended that IE should remain as your default browser. It is because, even though Firefox is 100 times better, more than half the software don't recognize it and won't be able to connect to the net to update and all, if you make it (or any other browser except IE) as your default browser. So, keep using Firefox, but make IE as your default browser.

Yup, sometimes ol' Microsoft updates get possessive and diddle with your settings, and so the best you can do is, either be prepared to restore a few by hand, or if you're really intense about it, do a System Restore (won't harm your updates...) Two main things the updates tend to hit on mine are (1) default browser and (2) Security notifications, which you can go back and diddle through Settings, Control Panel, Security Center. I personally don't have mine turned on all the time, but if you do, then there's no need to worry about step (2). On the other hand, if you have a personal firewall of some other brand (like, say, Comodo) running, then, you may need to turn OFF Microsoft's firewall...through step (2),

Another thing you MIGHT find is that Microsoft updates creates another "trash" shortcut to "Launch Microsoft Outlook". There's no harm in deleting that little booger, either...

You will be prompted to change certain settings to the usual IE ones as default, in fact, you should do that, because the system will be more harmonized and your Windows updates should go really smooth. So, I would use the IE default settings as much as possible. Also, since you now have IE, you may as well up grade to IE 7, which is really nice, with different features that make it more user friendly.

I use Firefox as my default browser. I also get Windows updates automatically. My defaults never changed.

Maybe somebody activated IE, it recognized IE is not the default browser, asked the user whether to change and the person accepted the offer.

If you want some help then you will really need to describe the problems you are having in more detail. Such as... in what way are your updates not working. Are they not downloading. Are they downloading but giving an error upon trying to install. If so, what is the error message. There can be many reasons why updates would not work... from you not having a valid copy of microsoft windows to a confiuration problem. Good Luck

sometimes they do depending on the update, if you are running windows XP SP2 or windows 2000 SP4 or later, you can use Set Access and Defaults and set up your defaults in this program. it is usually located on the start menu or in all programs depending on the view you are using..

go to your "start" menu and open "control panel" choose updates icon and change your settings so that they are not automatically installed. You can opt to have them downloaded and then you can hand pick what you want to install.

If you want to reverse anything that has been done, go to your "start" menu and "system restore" roll back to the day prior to any changes made and hopefully that will fix it.
