I can't think of any surf legends that passed exactly 2 months ago. Are you sure it was 2007? Here are some legends that have passed recently:
HAL JEPSEN
1940-2006
Filmmaker Hal Jepsen passed away on February 2, 2006 at the age of 66. Hal was born in 1940 in Los Angeles, California and began surfing at 17.
DAVE "DC" CHALMERS (1945-2007)
Dave Chalmers, longtime Coronado resident and surfer. He was 62.
E.J. Oshier (1916-2007)
Veteran of Southern California surfing -- particularly at San Onofre -- for over 70 years
BUZZY TRENT
Buzzy Trent (May 13, 1929 - September 27, 2006)
If any of these names ring a bell, just Google them, and see if that's what you are looking for. Good luck.

Chesser? Foo? Noll is still alive.
I can't imagine what legend you're thinking of.
The last death that happened in big wave surfing was Malik Joyeaux who died at Pipe. He was French and too young to leave much of a legacy.
