What happened with the Queen Elizabeth visit that was so embarrassing for Bush?

I am not sure about the 21 gun salute but he did make a "slip of the tongue" remark about her last visiting the US during our bicentennial in 1776 and then corrected himself. She gave him a look, she should have smacked the little monkey, and he commented that it was a look like a mother would give a child. Acting like a child he should expect nothing less. She is an elegant lady and to make such a comment just shows how arrogant and stupid this man really is. What is worse is that the speech was scripted. All he had to do was read the correct words but no, not our boy Georgie, he had to pull an Alfred E. Newman and get the silly smirk on his face again. She got him back at the state formal dinner so as a polite elder statesperson she handled it well. I just wonder what she is telling her close confidants about him. I have a feeling it is not complimentary.

  • Once again, this issue is being overhyped and taken as that the Queen tried to embarassed Bush. The first answerer is correct. Bush caught his faux pas mid-sentence and corrected himself. Later the Queen made a cute joke about it. I think the Bushes thought it was cute as well.

Nothing really. He misspoke and said 1776 instead of 1976 when referring to the Bicentennial.

Right - and I'm sure Bush was really, really embarrassed, too. NOT!
