Why can't I feel my fingers?

I have been having trouble for about a month and a half now. I can't feel the pinky and part of the ring finger in my left hand. I have been to the doctor, with no discernable improvement. The best way I can describe it is that it is like having the pinky and side of your hand full of novocaine all the time. I am having trouble holding my fingers evenly and have very little strength in my left hand. It is actually difficult to turn the pages in a book. Any suggestions or ideas. Oh, and not sure if it is important, but my grandmother had ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) and passed away from it several years ago.

Update:

Not carpal tunnel the doctor said. Wrong group of nerves are being affected. Had carpal tunnel in my other hand and this isn't the same.

sorry if someone already answered this but you describe classic syptoms of carpel tunnel syndrome and if your doctor has not sent you for testing you need a new doctor it is a outpatient surgery and short recovery time but man oh man is the relief worth it it sucks not being able to hold things and to drop stuff it is so dang embarrassing. feel free to search the web you'll see what i mean just type carpel tunnel
