Is there any place near Detroit Airport that is worth while visiting for a couple of hours during a lay over?

My lay over is 12 hours in total. I can either stay at the airport or go out for lunch or something. Please reply only if you know the area.

Well, if you lay over is 12 hours you could rent a car and drive into Dearborn (straight shot from I-94 which the airport is right off of.) and go to The Henry Ford Musuem, wonderful history museum. See link below. Or you could eat at the Wheat & Rye Resturant (either on Merriman or Middlebelt) they are know for great sandwiches. Or get some information on Ann Arbor (home of University of Michigan) lots of fun stuff to do there.

Enjoy! Come back and visit, Michigan has a lot to offer!

If I could see only one thing in Detroit it would be the Henry Ford museum.

You can see the Kennedy's limo, the last chair Abe Lincoln sat in, Tom Edison's laboratory (they moved it board by board from Menlo Park, NJ), the actual bike shop run by the Wright Brothers, Henry Ford's childhood home, plus boatloads of cars, trains and airplanes. They have a couple of places to eat there as well. I can't say it will be fine dining, but you will find something to make you smile.

You could spend a couple of days there and enjoy every moment.

To get there I'd hire a limo service, it is a tiny bit more than a cab but you can arrange to have the same guy pick you up at an appointed time in order to get back to the airport.

The Henry Ford Museum is truly a unique place. A MUST see.

Have fun and enjoy your time.

Don't pay any attention to those folks that speak so poorly about the city.

Hmmm... I'm not sure why people have been giving the Ann Arbor idea thumbs down. Maybe they're from East Lansing? :p Anyways, Ann Arbor isn't that far from the airport, and in my opinion, it's worth the drive (you just go West on I-94). There are shuttle services and airport taxis than can drive you there, too- just be sure to set uo transport in advance. U of M's campus is beautiful, and has some great restaurants, shops, and museums.

Also, if you rent a car, you'd have enough time to catch a Tigers game in Detroit (Comerica park is right off the freeway as well). You should see if they have a home game scheduled.

There really isn't a whole lot around the airport to see. You would have to get a car and venture to the city to really see anything. But the one person who suggested the Wheat & Rye is right, the best food in metro Detroit. If you want to do some shopping there is Fairlane Mall, its about 20 min from airport. Everyhing you need is in there.

    I live in Detroit.

Some good suggestions would be the Henry Ford in Dearborn. I think this is one of Metro Detroit's Favorite destinations.

Come to the city and experience downtown for a while. There are plenty of eateries to choose from. GM Headquarters has a great roster of shops and restaurants plus there is taxi service to and from the airport.

There are 3 casinos in Detroit

    The MGM Grand Detroit

Stay at the Airport. No good food for lunch anywhere. Get out of Detroit, As fast as you can.

Downtown Detroit. Have Lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe (Which you can't find anywhere else near the Airport) and go see a Tiger's Game or play a few slot games at one of our fine Casinos (can't be found in Windsor or any of the suburbs).

You could also hop on I-94 and go west and spend a few hours strolling around the U of M campus in Ann Arbor. Many outside cafes etc. and the original Boarders book store is there.

The Gandy Dancer is a great restaurant if you have time, as well as The Old German Restaurant.

Its only about 40 minutes drive.

Detroit is a very dangerous crime filled city. If you leave the airport, keep an eye on your back. If I were you I'd suggest buying a book and reading until your next flight.
