Deployment & Student Loans?

My reserve unit is being deployed in a year or so. However, I am (and still will be) in college at that time and I have student loans. I know under regular circumstances you have to start paying on student loans after 6 months of not going to school. Since I will be deployed for 15ish months, will I have to begin paying on my loans then? I plan on finishing my degree when I get back...

I found this: "Student loan relief.

As part of a budget act passed by Congress in February, reservists and active-duty members of the military deployed away from their permanent-duty stations receive a deferment for up to three years on student-loan payments. In addition, lenders must waive accruing interest on these missed payments. " at http://www.coloradosprings.com/military/fullstory....

That article should give you a start in looking into how to apply for the deferment.

when your deployed, send a copy of your deployment orders along with a letter explaining the situation. Also as part of the letter let them know you will be invoking the Service Members Civil Relief Act of 2003.
