Advertisers, both legal and illegal are using what are called 'botnets'. These are computers that have inadvertently downloaded a trojan virus which uses individuals computers without the owners knowledge. This is how you can get so many of the same email from different people.
As the gentleman above has suggested, try a few spam blocker programs that read the heuristics or characteristics of emails you deem unwanted and endeavours to sort your email for you. Some are over enthusiastic so monitor your trash folder for a while until it gets itself sorted.
