    Yahoo! Local Tips and Tricks

Please note: These tips and instructions apply only to a search of Yahoo! Local. For information and help using the general Yahoo! Search, please visit http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/ysearch.

    Get Specific

The more specific your search, the better and more precise your results will be. So whenever you can, use specific words to describe exactly what you're looking for and we'll bring you directly to results that match. (For example, instead of "restaurant," try "romantic restaurant" or "Sunday brunch").

    Search for More

Why not use Yahoo! Local to find local museums and landmarks, parking and public transportation, or zoos and ATMs? Yahoo! Local gives you more than just the names and numbers of your local businesses and services. It can help you see what's in your area and, as it evolves, you can look forward to finding local happenings and events as well.

    Save Your Favorite Locations

If you search on the same location frequently, you'll want to use the "Saved Locations" icon next to the "Location" search box. This feature makes it easy for you to quickly do new searches on your favorite area without having to re-enter the information. (By the way, you can add multiple locations to your Saved Locations area. Just click "My Locations", sign in to Yahoo!, and you can switch between the areas you've saved.) See details on saving your favorite locations.

    Map It

You can view your search results plotted on one map. Click the "View Results on Map" icon (located on your search results page) and Yahoo! will plot your local listings together on one map. To view detailed information like name, number, and address as well as to access each listing's driving directions and web site, just click one of the numbered icons on the map.

After you've mapped your local listings, you can plot additional search results onto the same map. Use the "Map Nearby" box in the right column of your map page and type in what you're looking for (e.g., movies, ATMs, gas stations, florists) and Yahoo! will layer these listings on top of your existing map. See details on mapping your search results.

Find Out How Far a Local Listing Is From Your Address

This comes in handy when you're trying to decide which business or service is most convenient for you. Enter an address, like the one for your home or office, along with your search terms, and Yahoo! Local will calculate the distance for you. The more specific you are with your address, the more precise the calculation will be and the more exact your results will be as well. For instance, "54th Street, New York, NY, kosher delis" will get you better results than "New York, NY delis."

Hone In and Narrow It Down

The "Refine Results" feature gives you the flexibility to hone in even further on the business or service you're looking for. This area is located in the left column of your results page and lets you refine your look-up by category, distance, and other attributes. So if you don't get as many results as you'd like, you might broaden the distance for your search. If you have too many results, you could pick a specific category to narrow your search. See details on saving your favorite locations.

Still Didn't Find It? Search the Web

Of course, we hope you find what you're looking for on Yahoo! Local. But in case you don't, Yahoo! Search can help you find your match by broadening your search to the entire Web. $

I agree it is not easy to use.

go to the new map, on the top right corner you will see a link that says

    Dial-Up Map (Original)

click on that and you are on your way.

Unfortunately, in the never-ending effort to "improve" things, the constant efforts to "fix" things not broken continues.

    I.e., you can't. Whee!
