Chihuahua medicine dose question!?
I have a 4 month of Chih. She has been having problems with allergies. The vet recommended giving her Benadryl. I am suppose to give her 2 milligrams.
Someone do the math, or am i just thinking to hard on this!
The bottle reads..
each 5 mil liters contains 12.5 milligrams...
Dala ..if i give her the 5ml of benadryl, i will be giving her 12.5 milligrams of meds...did you even read the question!
DP, i isn't the food. It could be a list of things. Mold from all the rain, cut grass, pollen in the air.
I hope this isn't a life long problem. I am sure it is just because "spring is in the air". I am giving her the Childrens Benadryl. I couldn't find the Infants.
carasmom..thanks. I just needed the math done.

Call your vet back and ask. I'm with DP on this though. Benedryl or OTC crap is a copout. You need to treat the problem.

Allergies to what?? I am getting sick of vet treating symptoms and not getting to the root of the problem. You can't treat a pet's symptoms without investigating and finding out why they are having these problems.
Find out what she is allergic to and get rid of it.. If you can't eradicate the allergen from her life, THEN you give medication.
If she has an allergy to something in her food, then change her foods.. Investigate and find out what the allergy is, and get rid of it.. Otherwise this will be a lifelong chronic problem that you will be treating.. Shortening your dog's life because she was constantly exposed to the allergen and on medication her whole life.
Edit: If it's grass, then obviously you need to give her something for the symptoms.. But you have heard me say this before.. TRY the Bragg applecider vinegar.. I Have a HUGE list of the things is has done for me, and things that it has done for my dogs. I used to be allergic to dust, dog danger, birds, pollen, you name it. I would get severe sinus infections in the spring and fall. I take applecider vinegar daily, and have for over 2 years now.. Allergies are GONE..
Put 1 tsp of applecider vinegar in her drinking water daily... Every single bowl of water she drinks.. If she won't drink the water start out slower and work her up to it.
If she absolutely refuses to drink the water which is unlikely. Then get applecider vinegar tablets.
Even if it's a mold problem which you should find out and get rid of.. Mold is responsible for all sorts of horrible things in people and pets.. But give her the applecider vinegar. It phs the system and gets rid of the toxins.. It will help her !

Give her less than 1ml, in fact I would start at a half of a ml which is just about 3-4 drops.
If she sleeps too much reduce the dose from 2mg down lower. How much does she weigh? She's probably around a pound and a half at 4 mo?

I would speak with your vet in more detail before giving anything over the counter. Benadryl is often given to dogs for allergies (the baby variety for Chi's NOT the adult one) It's always be best to be sure first though. Your vet knows your dogs health better than anyone.
Someone on one of my Chi groups a couple of years back gave her Chi a tiny does and it died because it had a reaction to something in it.
Please be sure and don;t risk your baby unless your vet says it's okay. he will also tell you the correct dosage for your dog if it's okay.

If each 5 mL dose contains 12.5 mg, then each mL is 2.5 mg... I would give 0.8 mL for a dose of 2.0 mg.

0.8 miligrams.
so around a fith of it i guess it probly would be best to take the thingie to the vet and double chek it to make sure you dont give your pet and overdose.
good luck!!!
