If 12 million of us decided not to pay our taxes, would the federal government decide to let us off?

So. the argument is that it would be too difficult to round up 12 million illegals? I'm sure that wouldn't be the philosophy of the IRS.

Well, at least opponents of amnesty aren't the only ones who are objecting to the Kennedy-McCain immigration bill. Lots of illegals are unhappy, too:

http://apnews.myway.com/article/20070517/D8P6DP802...

Maybe that will count for something with John McCain -- since the well-founded reservations of fellow Republicans are obviously irrelevant to him.

Update:

Crabby - your answer has nothing to do with the question. It's an analogy, not a comment on whether illegals pay taxes or not.

Update 2:

Queen - what punishment are the illegals getting for the crime? A "fast-forward" in the line, ahead of those who are still waiting LEGALLY! Call it what you want - it still doesn't make sense to me.

Update 3:

Okay Queen - you certainly have more facts to back up your point than most posters! I obviously need to look into it more, because I'm still not sold. That's the conservative in me, I tend to squint hard at the actions of our government.

I guess if the 12 million "undocumented" tax filers had a strong lobby saying that anyone who wanted to enforce the law against them was racist, and had political parties thinking that they could get these voters in their back pocket by pandering to them, there would be a groundswell for amnesty for them too.

Of course, it would bankrupt the country, encourage further illegality, erode respect for the rule of law and greatly weaken the nation.

Good thing illegal immigration does NONE of those things! (sarcasm)

Here is a dirty little secret our government does not want you to know. They can and have been collecting taxes from "them damn illegals". They do it this way,

    1) The IRS issues them a number not a social, but one specifically to collect taxes from them. It is called an Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN). This is something the government has been doing since the 1990's

So while some of you have been up in arms about them not paying into the system and just taking, wake up, they have been paying and not just sales tax. Don't get me wrong, some have not been but as soon as some of them found out that they could, they have been.

This immigration bill is NOT AMNESTY. YOU HAVE BEEN SOUND BYTED TO DEATH.

Here are what the details say:

They have to go to the BACK OF THE LINE, not the front, behind those who already put in their paperwork. They DO NOT leap frog over anyone for PERMANENT LEGAL status.

    To apply for residency

application fee $550.00 just to get approval prior to getting green card

For work permit$195.00 until green card is awarded

Adjustment of status $395.00 which gets the green card number actually issued.

For this "path to citizenship they are proposing"

    1) They have to pay BACK TAXES for every year they were here ILLEGALLY which THEY have to establish. This is what lets the government know where to put them in the "back of the line"

    2) They have to pay a fine of about $2,000 minimum

    3) Retaining an immigration attorney to do paperwork alone is about $1,500- $3,000

total so far:- $4,600-$6,700 and this does not count the back taxes.

On the minimum wages most of these people get, they won't meet those levels without help.

Then when they become residents, they would have to wait the 5 years before they could apply for citizenship, which would be another $550.00 or more

In the meantime, they will be paying taxes. The process could possibly take about 11 years.

Amnesty def- . an act of forgiveness for past offenses, esp. to a class of persons as a whole.

a forgetting or overlooking of any past offense.

IF they are being told to go to the BACK OF THE LINE, BEING TOLD THEY HAVE TO PAY A PENALTY AND PAY BACK TAXES, WHERE IS THE AMNESTY??? This is not going to be for free which is what an AMNESTY WOULD GIVE.

Anyone can apply for a chance to work by paying $195.00 for a work permit which can be up to 1 year valid. They would then have to either return to their country and apply for legal status and go through the steps I outlined above or renew the work permit ONCE ONLY. Then they have no choice but to go through the steps outlined already.

The facts don't back you up. Every study that's been done shows that the illegals are paying some taxes. Ant the part that's not being paid is that which is supposed to be collected by employers and turned over to the government. Except that these employers are pocketing the money.

So--regardless of which side of the issue your on--put the blame for unpaid taxes wher it belongs--on the employers who are stealing the tax money, not on the immigrants.

Now that would be a welcome sight for me. Twelve million Americans, armed and angry, and ready to fight the government on the matter of whose needs will have priority: those of the government or those of the people. I hope the people win all the battles that are fought. I hope that not many battles are fought because the soldiers decide that they prefer to disobey their orders instead of having to shoot each other's mom and kid brother just so Uncle Sam can have his loot.

Now why do you suppose their are more cops that hand out tickets than cops that fight crime?

Because crime doesn't pay. Honest citizens do. Government, whether federal or local, concentrate on the paying customers.

Here's a better analogy for you....

If ONE citizen with an average salary of $150,000 didn't pay his taxes....would the IRS find that ONE person???

    YOU BETCHA!!!

Happened to a friend of mine.

So if they can find one person for tax evasion...how hard can it be to find 12 million???
