It sounds as if you have lost the driver for your cd rom, or the sound card. You need to find out which hardware it is saying is not working. Try going into control panel, sounds and audio devices and checking the hardware using the troubleshoot facility.
Once you have found out which hardware has the problem, reinstall the driver for that piece of equipment. If you do not have the driver, you can probably get it from http://www.driverguide.com/

The last answer was sort of right. Depending on what OS you have (XP, 2000, ME, 98, etc...) you still need to check the device manager. First check what OS you have by right clicking on the My Computer icon, and go to Properties. That will tell you, then like I said before depending on what OS, in that same screen (XP) go to the Hardware Tab, and Device Manager.
Another way is to find the Control Panel, with Start | Settings | Control Panel | System | Hardware Tab | Device Manager (XP, and most likely 2K)
Then this is where you find the issue, it will most likely will be sticking out of line, with a Yellow Diamond with a Black Exclaimation point, called a BANG! See which one of your devices is cheating on you, find the updated driver through the manufactures website (www. h | p . com) if its a H | P. Download it, and then follow the install instructions.
