My motorcycle is hard to start when it's cold?

I'm a new rider and would appreciate any tips to make starting easier. It's a 1985 Suzuki GS 550, it's tuned fine, but after I try for about 5 or 10 seconds the battery slows down alot. Had the battery tested and it tested ok.

Full choke, no throttle, be completely sure that your fuel tap is open and that your kill switch is in RUN, and you may want to try turning your idle adjuster up about half a turn.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned yet that 10 seconds is WAY too long to be cranking for. Even 5 seconds is too long in my opinion. The electrical system can't handle that much current draw for that long and if your battery wasn't stuffed to begin with it will be afterward. If it hasn't started by 3 seconds, 5 max, get OFF the starter and wait a while before trying again.

Your bike should have a choke on it. Make sure you are engaging the choke when you try to start it on cold days. It sounds like your battery is weak. I would test the battery myself (multimeter from Home Depot, $20). It should be between 11-14 Volts (assuming 12V battery). Also get a battery tender or trickle charger. They will keep your battery healthy in the winter and when your bike just sits there. They aren't that expensive and worth every penny. If it isn't the battery then I would make sure your carb is clean. A gunked up carb will make a bike hard to start. If the bike runs fine once it is started, I definately think it's the battery.

check to make sure the choke is working properly......spray it with like wd-40.Next do a compression check. How is take the spark plug out and screw in the compression checker. You might want to chane to a colder or hotter plug, call up the dealer they'll tell you which is best for you.
