Why is it so hard for some, to respect other people believes?

It is sometimes as if other people can't handle the fact that we have an opinion of our own. We have to think the way they do, believe what they believe or we are wrong...

Strange.

    Hi Sweetera

Did you ever hear the expression "having the strength of one's convictions"?

People who "have the strength of their convictions" are people who are able to believe whatever they believe without needing other people to approve.

People who DON'T "have the strength of their own convictions" are constantly looking to other people to validate their beliefs, opinions, etc.

The downside for people in the second group is that they never feel sure of themselves. Firstly because they often cannot give a reasoned explanation for what they think/believe - which leaves them feeling permanently stupid.

Secondly, because there's always a danger that something they believe will go out of fashion and they won't notice. Or that a new belief or opinion will come along and they won't notice straight away!

Because these people are so unsure of themselves they will tend to also be highly defensive, even aggressive. Thus whenever they hear or read something that disagrees with whatever is going on in their head they are likely to attack it - as an act of self-defence.

It isn't about you - it's about them.

You might not think much of this way of thinking - but if you criticise what they think, aren't you doing the very thing you are criticising?

I guess we're all just human

    ;-)

I know what you mean. This site is prejudiced, too. The mediators of it will yank my stuff at times, even with nothing wrong or bad in it. I'm mostly conservartive, so I think someone watching is automatically offended by even a reasonable discourse with a different viewpoint, sometimes.

Some people want freedom but are quick to deny the same. How can people come to peace when they aren't even allowed to air their beliefs & reason things out?

I absolutely know what you mean and while I can't say I was never like that, I sincerely hope I've changed since then. People truly can't handle others opinions/beliefs quite often because they either convince themselves or let others convince them that THEIR beliefs are right and authoritative and nothing else can change that or mean as much to them; they aren't interested in listening to other view points and certainly not respecting them; it is rather sad....how often we hold ourselves back by trying to dictate to others and make ourselves seem superior.

Well if something seems stupid to you its hard to respect it. Like if someone told you they believe in flying carpets and pink tigers...

Because belief without evidence is merely delusion.
