Shaving cream as a baseball glove softener/ conditioner?

I read somewhere that shaving cream could be used as a glove softener/ conditioner. I have never heard of this. I have used a glove cream that is similar to shaving cream but can also be baked in the oven (hot glove cream treatment I think). Has anyone out there used shaving cream? If so, what kind of results did you receive, and is there a particular type of cream that works best?

Thanks

yes shaving cream can be used as a glove conditioner and softener. as stated in the other answers you can also use saddle soap and other things like that, but shaving cream is the best. As you said you can also use the hot glove treatment, but that is bad for several reasons. using heat to break in a glove is not a good idea. the three methods of heat would be the hot glove oven treatment, microwaving your glove, or sticking it in the dryer. all these things break in a glove quickly, but they comprmise the quality of the leather. it can soften it too much, which means the pocket will wear out quicker. it can also cause the glove to crack, sacrificing the longevity, or durability, of the glove. it can also cause the laces to weaken, increasing the chances that they will snap or break, meanig you will have to get it relaced. Shaving cream, however, softens it enough to allow the glove to mold to your hand. It makes it just soft enough to shape and form your pocket. It can also provide the right amount of moisture to avoid cracking and ripping. you take a hand towel and put some shaving cream on it. you gently rub it into the leather all over the glove. make sure you get it all over, inside the pocket, in between the fingers, inside the palm, everywhere. after that, wrap one, two, or three balls in it with a baseball belt or big rubber bands. make sure the balls are forming the pocket exactly how you want it. let it dry for about a day. after that play catch with it allowing you to mold it to your hand. do this however many times you want to break it in and do it about once a week after its broken in. you dont really need to let it dry though, i never do. i play catch with it less than 24 hours aftewr its dry, but never right after i apply the shaving cream. a good shaving cream to use is noxima. you can use other brands, but make sure that they dont have a scent because then your glove will smell like that. make sure it is also foam, not a gel. it must also contain lanolin. i hope this helped.

I have also used the shaving cream method on every glove I ever owned. works great. I try to use the cream with the least amount of smell possible. put a ball or two inside and wrap it up. I have heard a lot of people saying with string or belts, but think about it... a glove covered in shaving cream should be a little more contained. I use saran wrap or put it in a grocery bag that I twist until it is tight around the glove.

Done it lots of times. Alot of shaving cream, rub in well, take a baseball or softball, insert a baseball or softball-just like you were holding it- and tie a string around it. Let set a day or so, breaks the glove in pretty good.

I have always used glove grease that you can get at any good sporting goods store. It comes in a tube and is like glove oil but a lot thicker and rubs in well.

    never heard of shavingcream,

try a good dose of saddel soap and rub in to the glove till it lathers and let it dry, try that 3 times and it should soften it up so it will bend.

Source(s): leather is best just take care of it

Would you use hot glove conditioner to shave?

i've heard of shaving cream, even tried it. i personally prefer

to use petroleum jelly, to soften and to keep laces from cracking.
