Do the following on both computers...

Start Menu > Control Panel > Network Setup Wizard.

Select the options that match you network setup. Once done make sure you have the option "My Networking Places" in your Start Menu, you PC's will show up in there.

Probably the easiest way would be to run the "Network Setup Wizard" on both computers." You can run network setup wizard by clicking the start menu, all programs, accessories, communications, network setup wizard. The wizard walks you through the network setup process (sharing files and folders, sharing an internet connection, sharing a printer, etc.)

Right click my computer on each machine, set simple names for each, and set them to the same simple workgroup name. Then right click any foldersor printers you wish to make available and set them shared. Within 20 minutes you should see each machine with shared resources in your network places.

Just right click on the folder you want to share, and pick Sharing and Security, share the folder then access it from the other computer like this \\computer name\shared folder.. if they are on the same router like you said, you should be able to access the folder.
