Yes. The only reason the '98 Marlins sucked after the WS is because the owner only wanted to make money and did not realy care about how the team performed. He got rid of all the players because it was a smart buisness move. The Cardinals have fewer wins than the other Missouri team, (KC) so yes, they are the worst defending champs in the history of the sport.

Not even close.
The 1998 Florida Marlins, the 1997 champions, were an awful team losing 108 games. Marlins owner Wayne Huizenga, after getting the Worlds Series win, decided that he no longer wanted to spend any money on the team. So most of the key players were allowed to leave as free agents(Moises Alou, Bobby Bonilla, Devon White), or traded(Gary Sheffield, Rob Nen, Kevin Brown, Edgar Renteria, Charles Johnson). That left a depleted team, that could not compete.
The 1918 White Sox, 1960 Dodgers, 1989 Dodgers, 1991 Reds, and 2003 Angels all were lousy teams the year after winning the title.

They didn't win the Series, but the 1914 Athletics won the AL with a sterling 99-53 record. Connie Mack then sold off all his talent rather than give them raises, and the 1915 team fell to a miserable 43-109.

It's a little too early to call, as far as the Cardinals go, but as of right now, I'll have to say the '98 Marlins.
