    It requires work because if you turn the engine off (thus cutting off the car's source of energy), it will stop moving after a while.

    Even in a totally frictionless environment, it still requires work to start the car in motion.

    Work is force exerted through a distance. Turn the steering wheel; push down on the accelerator or brake pedal.

    Your engine produces energy by burning fuel. The energy then drives pistons, which then drive the axles, which drive the wheels against the ground, which pushes back on your wheels, rotating them an making you go forward.
