Why is my horse licking the ground?

I was at a cross country event and my horse was licking the ground after a ride. Why was he doing this? He did not have a salt block in his paddock.

there was nothing on the ground, ppl!! please be serious when answering questions.

    there really could be many diffrent reasons but i would say it would have been some thing he could smell and wanted to check it out with his tounge

    it has more than likely found a natural salt deposit if my horses found one they would do it too

    It could be becasuse there was something was on the ground. Like a cheeseburger or roadkill!
