Who wants to ride a bike?

I mean, come on! Who in their right minds wants to spend less money on gas and doctors? Who wants to be healthy and fit? Fat is so much more fun! It feels good to never have any energy and to spend so much time in the car that our kids get raised by the XBox. Gotta love that new car smell! Let's make gas cheaper so we can live 10 more miles away from work and spend half an hour longer in the car because all our neighbors followed us out to the burbs. I don't know about you but I hate all these skinny people on bikes and walking. Let's get rid of bike lanes and sidewalks and build our McMansions right up to the road so we don't even have to bust out the smog-belching mower. Then we can vote for the government to build more roads so we can move even further out. Hey, when are they going to open that new mall? Hope they pave enough parking lots...

Update:

Of course I realize that not everyone can use a bike for all their travel needs. My purpose is to get you to ask why. Why is it a pain in the butt to get around without a car? The town you live in was not designed for you. It was designed for your car. The people who have pointed out that it is impractical in many cases to walk/ride a bike or impossible for many of us to live closer to where we work and shop are absolutely right. We should be asking why. Cheap gas and government funded roads have made it possible to build a society based on cars. Zoning laws have made it hard to have a business near your house. For the folks who suggest that I try it myself for a week, I've been commuting by bike for the last 3 months. I'm in a unique situation because I'm a grad student and I chose to live close to school. Many of my classmates commute up to 30 minutes each way because rent is cheaper further out. Personally, I think I save money by paying higher rent and biking.

I want to ride a bike! I just bought one three days ago. I'm really loving it! I feel so much healthier riding it every night. I work all day, walk three miles after work, eat dinner, bike ride, then do my regular chores around the house before bed. I've lost 30 lbs since last year at this time and I feel FABULOUS!!!!!! I look pretty damn good, too. Oh, and my house is full of fresh food, veggies and fruits-and absolutely NO meat...no "McMansions" for me...I wouldn't eat fast food with someone else's mouth.

I love where I live because it's cool to bike. It's a status symbol in my office where people respect you because of it. I bike to work every day (rain or shine) and I wouldn't trade it for the world. I feel better, I look better, my stress is lower than it would be otherwise. I get sick much less and I don't have to waste my time going to the gym. By the time I get home, I've had my work out for the day and I'm done. More time for my family, my garden and my friends. We do have a car, but most days it doesn't get out of the driveway. Bikers are more fit and better educated than the average commuter.

Your wit is astonishing. Very sardonic.

The only problem I've had with riding my bike is that it can't get you as far as you need to go as fast as a car. Thereby, the convenience of a car. It's more "accurate" than a bus, since you can get to your exact destination, but if you need to go more than a few miles, prepare to leave an hour or two ahead of time and to be exhausted once you get there. (At least with me.) A combination of bus and bike seem to get me around pretty well. Unless I'm really tired. :)

Unfortunatly for some of us, riding our bikes to work isnt a viable option. I work 18 miles from my home. Why should I move to a more expensive home (where i work the houses are about 2x as expensive as where i live) when I have my house paid off already. I keep in shape by working out and yes even riding a bike on weekends, so don't preach to me about riding your bike to work every day.

I would love to ride a bike more often. However, due to health issues and location that's not a good idea. We live in a rural area with many hills, mountains, and blind turns. Up here, we don't have a single shopping mall.
