Italian fried potato balls?
Many years ago, a local in Palermo took me out to eat. One of the things I remember seemed to be balls/dumplings about 1.5"-2" across, made out of mashed or shredded potatoes, and with the inside stuffed with peas or peas in some creamy sauce. These were then deep-fried, maybe after rolling in breadcrumbs or something. Does anyone know what these are, how to make them?

I feel yr memory is slightly failing at years distance...!!
I guess what you've had in Palermo was "Arancini" and they're made out of rice and not of potatoes...!!
Here's a link for the traditional preparation (it takes 2 days..!!)

but I suggest you to check and pick from below simplier recipes:

Enjoy them...!!

i know cazzilli -- for lack of a better description it is very similar -- fried balls and croquettes are popular all over italy and some have made it stateside (like suppli al telefono -- telephone lines because the mozz pulls out like telephone lines) but most haven't,
heres a basic recipe for cazzilli from foodnetwork.com --
