Depends - what time are you arriving in Christchurch?
I seem to always arrive at midnight or 1am - I go to the airport motel and grab the next flight out in the morning.

I haven't been to Chch for years so things will have changed, but a trip over the hill to Akaroa was one of the places I enjoyed.
It was originally a French Settlement..
