I find it interesting that other pantheons also have 3 individuals who determine fates - Greek has the Fates/Moerae/Moirai, Romans has the Parcae, Norse has the Norns, Anglo-Saxon has the Wyrd Sisters, The Celts has the Morrigan (Badb, Macha, & Nemain), Native Americans has the Three Sisters, etc...

In Greek mythology, Atropos ("without turn", "she who cannot be turned away") was the third of the Moerae. She was the oldest of the Three Fates, and was known as the "inflexible" or "inevitable." It was Atropos who chose the mechanism of death and ended the life of each mortal by cutting their thread with her "abhorred shears." She worked along with Clotho, who spun the thread, and Lachesis, who measured the length. Her origin, along with the other two fates, is uncertain. Although some called them the daughters of the night. It is clear, however, that at a certain period they ceased to be concerned with death and became instead those power which decided what must happen to individuals. Although Zeus was the chief Greek god and their father, he was still subject to the decisions of the Fates, and thus the executor of destiny rather than its source.
According to Hesiod's Theogony, Atropos and her sisters (Clotho and Lachesis) were the daughters of Nyx (Night).
Her Roman equivalent was Morta.
The alkaloid extract of the deadly nightshade plant, atropine, is named after her due to its extremely high toxicity.

In Greek mythology, Atropos was one of the three Moirae, the Fates, the female deities who supervised fate rather than determine it. Atropos was the fate who cut the thread or web of life. She was known as the "inflexible" or "inevitable" and cut this thread with the "abhorred shears." She worked along with Clotho, who spun the thread, and Lachesis, who measured the length. They were the daughters of Zeus and Themis (the goddess of order.) It is not clear whether the fates were superior to Zeus or if he was subject to them as mortals were. The Roman name of the fates are Nona, Decuma, and Morta.

Atropos is said to be the eldest, the best and the shortest of the sisters. Clotho is the "spinner" and Lachesis the apportioner of lots. The thread of life is spun upon Clotho's spindle, measured by the rod of Lachesis and finally snipped by the shears of Atropos, the inevitable one. Their priests and ministers were always oracles, seers and soothsayers.
The Fates played a role in many myths...
There are various versions of their parentage:
1) Erebus & Nyx (Night)
2) Nyx (Night)
3) Chaos
4) Zeus & Themis
5) Ananke (Necessity)
The Fates are said to have invented seven of the letters of the alphabet: alfa, vita, ita, taf, iota and ipsilon

Fates, in Greek mythology, the three goddesses who determined human life and destiny. Known as Moirai in Greek and Parcae in Latin, the Fates apportioned to each person at birth a share of good and evil, although one might increase the evil by one's own folly. Portrayed in art and poetry as stern old women or as somber maidens, the goddesses were often thought of as weavers.Atropos, the Inexorable, carried the dread shears that cut the thread of life at the appointed time. The decisions of the Fates could not be altered, even by the gods.

Atropus is said to be the eldest, the best and the shortest of the sisters; Clotho is the 'spinner', and Lachesis the apportioner of lots. It has also been claimed that Tyche (Fortune) was one of the MOERAE, and the most powerful of the sisters because beauty, virtue, and good Fame are in her keeping, and also because she finds pleasure in dashing immoderate hopes.
